Finding the right neurorehabilitation clinic: what to look for

After a stroke, an injury, or with a progressive neurological condition, the quality of rehabilitation largely determines how much independence is regained. But how do you recognise good neurological rehabilitation? Six criteria help with the assessment.

1. Genuine specialisation in neurology

Neurological rehabilitation is a field of its own, with its own concepts, assessments, and further training such as Bobath or PNF. Ask whether the facility treats exclusively or predominantly neurological patients and how the team is qualified for this. A team that works with stroke, MS, Parkinson’s, or cerebral palsy every day recognises patterns and potential faster.

2. Therapy intensity and repetition count

The research is unambiguous: the number of movement repetitions is one of the most important drivers of recovery. Ask specifically how many repetitions are actually achieved in a session. Robotic systems achieve many times more than manual therapy alone, without sacrificing movement quality.

3. Technology as a tool, not a showroom

What matters is not whether a device exists, but whether it is used systematically and according to evidence. Ask which systems would be used for your condition and why, and whether the technology costs extra. With serious providers, the technology is part of the regular programme.

4. Measurable progress

Good rehabilitation makes progress visible: with standardised assessments at the start, clear therapy goals, and regular progress measurement. Data-driven systems record every session and make improvements objectively traceable. Ask how and how often your progress is measured and discussed with you.

5. A programme that fits your life

Outpatient rehabilitation has to be compatible with daily life, work, or school: opening hours, accessibility, the option of intensive therapy blocks, and, for children, family involvement. Also check which languages the team can communicate in; being understood is part of therapy quality.

6. Clean insurance handling

Cost approvals, prescriptions, direct billing with KVG, IV, UVG, or MV: a good clinic takes this administration off your hands entirely and tells you transparently before therapy begins which costs are covered. Extra invoices charged to the patient for the use of technology, or surprise out-of-pocket shares, are a warning sign.

The simplest way to judge
